THE DESIRE CARD by Lee Matthew Goldberg, Crime/Suspense, 299 pp., $13.29 (paperback) $3.99 (Kindle)

Title: THE DESIRE CARD
Author: Lee Matthew Goldberg
Publisher: Fahrenheit Press
Pages: TBA
Genre: Crime/Suspense

Any wish fulfilled for the right price. That’s the promise the Desire Card gives to its elite clients. But if the Card doesn’t feel like they’ve been justly compensated, the “price” will be more menacing than the clients could ever imagine.

Harrison Stockton learns this lesson all too well. Harrison has lived an adult life of privilege and excess: a high-powered job on Wall Street along with a fondness for alcohol and pills, and a family he adores, yet has no time for. All of this comes crashing to a halt when he loses his executive job and discovers he has liver cirrhosis with mere months left to live.

After finding himself far down on the donor list, Harrison takes matters into his own hands. This decision sparks a gritty and gripping quest that takes him to the slums of Mumbai in search of a black market organ and forces him under the Desire Card’s thumb. When his moral descent threatens his wife and children, Harrison must decide whether to save himself at any cost, or do what’s right and put a stop to the Card.

THE DESIRE CARD is a taut international thriller that explores what a man will do to survive when money isn’t always enough to get everything he desires. It’s the first book in a series followed by PREY NO MORE that focuses on other people indebted to this sinister organization, where the actual price is the cost of one’s soul.

PRAISE:

“Careful what you wish for, especially from a nefarious shadow organization, in this gripping start to Lee Matthew Goldberg’s fast-paced, highly compelling, buzz worthy new series. If you love characters morally compromised, richly drawn, and constantly surprising, you’ll love THE DESIRE CARD. I burned through the first book and can’t wait to get my hands on PREY NO MORE to see where this endlessly exciting story takes me next! Loved it!” – Daniel Palmer, critically acclaimed suspense author

HARRISON STUMBLED INTO CENTRAL PARK CLUTCHING THE SILVER BRIEFCASE, HIS BODY SHAKING FROM BEING HUNTED. Clouds clogged the sky. The trees seemed like creatures towering over him. He turned around to see the man in the Humphrey Bogart mask running toward the entrance, a gun bulging from the guy’s inside pocket. The man’s cold eyes scanned the park, zeroing in. Harrison took off down a dirt path until he was alone with only the wind ringing in his ears.
He wanted to collapse; he begged himself to just give in. Nature would destroy him soon anyway, and his shins were starting to feel like they’d been repeatedly stabbed. He coughed up an excess of blood and mucus that spilled down a rock. Now he’d gone so far down the trail that he couldn’t see where he entered. The sound of footsteps came from all directions. A distorted laugh caused all the nearby pigeons to shoot toward the sky. The laugh was followed by an eerie whistle that became louder and louder as he spun around expecting to see his pursuer.
A shadow passed behind a tree, bigger than any animal. He propped himself up against a rock, too exhausted to move any farther, closing his eyes and waiting to die. He could see tomorrow’s headlines declaring his death as a mugging gone wrong.
“Gracie,” he cried, trembling. “Brent, my boy…oh God.”
He had pissed himself now, the urine hot and sticky as it trickled down his pants leg. He still held the silver briefcase close to his chest, resolving not to let it go without a fight.
The man in the Bogart mask emerged from behind a tree holding a gun.
“Just hand it over, Mr. Stockton,” the man said. The voice box attached to his mouth made him sound robotic, weirdly calm. “You don’t want this to get any more complicated than it already has.”
The man made a grab for the briefcase, but Harrison held on tight.
“You’ll kill me anyway,” Harrison yelled, spooking any pigeons that hadn’t already flown away.
“Only if you force me to do so.”
The man kicked Harrison in the shin, causing him to nearly buckle over. Harrison was thrown to the ground, the man pinning him down. He still managed to hold onto the briefcase as if it was fused to his hand.
“The Boss doesn’t know about what you’ve done yet,” the man said, hitting Harrison’s head against the hard dirt. “Do you understand what that means? That means you can still live. And he’ll never find out as long as we get what we’re owed.”
“Why would you do that for me?” he asked, seeing four masked men spinning around.
The man stepped back and pointed the gun between Harrison’s eyes.
“The Boss doesn’t like when things don’t go according to plan. I could be in as much trouble as you for letting this slip-up happen. So let’s make this easy for both of us.”
Harrison got on one elbow and hoisted himself up.
“Do I have your word?”
The man nodded.
“And my family? My wife…my kids? I wouldn’t have to worry about them being hurt?”
“As much as you might think that you are our sole concern, we have an entire organization to run beyond your pithy life. Now I will count to ten and if you don’t hand over the briefcase, I’ll put a bullet between your eyes.”
Harrison thought about what his life had really amounted to. All the hours he’d slaved at Sanford & Co., making rich people boatloads richer. Getting into the office before dawn and often heading home in the middle of the night. Sacrificing his family, his youth, his sanity. How it had made him into a drinker, a serial gorger of all vices, just so he could forget about what he was losing. After all of that, what did he have left to show?
“…8…9…10,” the man said, about to pull the trigger.
“All right, all right.”
Harrison handed over the briefcase. The man opened it up and appeared to be satisfied, a smirking grin visible through his mask.
“I’ll leave you with this nugget of wisdom,” he said, without putting the gun away. “If what you did manages to compromise us in any way, if there are any rippling after-effects, be prepared to come across the Boss. He’s known to wear a Clark Gable mask.” The man’s smirk had disappeared. “He only appears when he’s ready to bloody his hands. Good day, Mr. Stockton.”
“Who are you people? Under the masks…who are you really?”
The man raised the gun over Harrison’s head.
“I doubt you’ll ever find out,” he said, and struck Harrison on the forehead with the handle.
A trickle of blood spilled down Harrison’s nose and felt cold on his tongue. He slunk down and rested his cheek against the dirt, watching the man in the mask take off through the trees, the silver briefcase shining like a beam of light snaking through the leaves. And then the man finally disappeared—as if he was nothing more than a nightmare brought to life and extinguished once the fitful dreamer finally woke.
Harrison pressed against his rib cage and felt for his engorged liver. Cursed at it. Wanted to tear it from his stomach. He’d been poisoned from within for too long, his unending punishment for all of his crimes. Blood zigzagged into his eyes as the wound on his forehead opened up even more. With his other hand he reached into his pocket and removed his wallet. A thin metallic card fell from out of a sleeve and sat in a puddle of blood that had collected in the dirt.
He crumpled it up in his fist since it was responsible for letting these psychopaths into his life. He knew he’d never feel completely settled again, always worried that they might come after him and his family. The Desire Card had caused him to seek out gruesome and despicable wishes. From the instant this devil’s temptation had been placed in his hands, his moral compass never stood a chance. So he chucked it into the air and watched it sail over the rocks for some other fool to find.
“I’m sorry, Helene,” he mumbled to the wind. He knew he’d have to come clean about everything. His head throbbed, and he recalled a memory from twenty-five years ago. Spying her in the quad at Chilton College drinking a cherry Coke, tan and shapely from field hockey, the entire campus becoming muted except for her. He took a chance by flirting miserably and changing the course of their lives.
She would’ve been better off if they had never met. In such a short amount of time, he’d fallen so far. Now because of him people had been sliced up, left for dead, and soon he’d follow them to his own grave. As he drifted off into unconsciousness, he remembered that it all began to spiral out of control on his last day at Sanford & Co. over a month ago, this treacherous path he embarked on, his dark and dried-up destiny.

Meet the Author: Patrick Stull, Author of Encounters

American artist Patrick Stull has spent the last eighteen years mostly creating imagery about the lives of women. He searches for what lies beneath the surface of his subjects, empowering each one he encounters. He has recently ventured into the realm of surrealism, creating powerful imagery that reflects on our humanity while dealing with the meaning and power of art.

Stull say's, "My work has allowed me to venture past the camera into the realm of a humanist, an artistic life, delving into the intellectual, a more cerebral life experience, creating what I call 'connectivism.'"

His ongoing work is based in large-scale digital photography accompanied by sculpture/body casts, composition art, painting, poetry/prose and drawings.  His art is then integrated, collectively, into exhibitions to provide the viewer a once in a lifetime experience. The presentation of the work is delivered to the viewer in a unique and emotionally powerful way.

Stull, 71, a self-taught artist, works in many artistic disciplines. Educated at San Diego State University with degrees in psychology, economics and philosophy during the 1960’s, amidst the backdrop of the counter-culture revolution and the Viet Nam War, where his social consciousness and political views were shaped. Stull emerged from a Catholic Irish/German family, one of five children where work, discipline and religion took precedence over emotional expressions of the self – a different kind of loving environment. Being a husband of thirty-plus years and father to two has taught him the power of kindness, love and commitment.
His latest book is the fine art photography book, Encounters.

Title: ENCOUNTERS
Author: Patrick Stull
Publisher: Independent
Pages: 250
Genre: Fine Art Photography Book

With photography at its base, Stull offers a nuanced explication of his encounters to allow the viewer an opportunity to form a relationship with his art. While looking within ourselves, exploring our own feelings, he hopes that he will inspire greater humaneness in response to his art.

ENCOUNTERS is the second in a series of six large-format books in which artist, photographer and author, Patrick Stull explores a wide range of experiences. Using light and the physical body, the written word and his artistry he creates imagery that examines aspects of the lives of women.

Compiled over the last 18 years, the images in ENCOUNTERS, Stull says, are meant to “inspire and challenge the observer while always empowering the subject.”

Stull brings a powerful sense of the surreal and the spiritual to his work as he plots a course along the many paths of the human experience. His imagery runs from the ghostly and ephemeral to the flowing and fiery.

As much as he concentrates on the human form, Stull never forgets to focus on the humanity of his subjects. His choice of the coffee-table style book format draws the viewer into an experience both intimate and universal.
Stull’s first book in his series, titled EVOLVE, was published in 2006. A third book, titled HIDDEN DIMENSIONS, is completed and awaiting publication. Future titles in the series include DHARMA, BEING DIFFERENT, and YOGA, A HEALING MOMENT.
Stull hopes that his readers come away from the book with “a love for art and a respect for the female who gives us life and challenges us to be better human beings.

What first inspired you to write or who inspired you?

Inspiration comes from the bowels of my childhood and early adult life. I really don’t understand its energy or direction. I can only see the results and experience the ride. My artistic work is based in photography of the human body, mostly in its natural, nude state. Out of this came the written word, odes and prose to express these artistic encounters. It is light that inspires my photography and the human condition that channels my words.

At what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I started writing at the age of 55. It began haphazardly and as a need to release energy my photographic subjects instilled in me. Writing became an insatiable means to express what my artistic work was emotionally and cerebrally bringing to the surface.

Do you have a day job?  What do you do?

For the last twenty years I have been a full-time photographer and artist. I do not see it as work - it’s enjoyment.

Can you name three writing tips to pass on to aspiring authors?

You need passion about the things you want to impart.
Don’t look to money or fame.
Try to find something that cleanses the soul and gives you purpose to write the next line.

How often do you write?

I write at least five days a week. The words are almost always emotionally driven. Some days it is very difficult to write, other days it flows rapidly and I can’t stop. The rich days are the moments that I love. Then there’s a sense of excitement, it’s almost an erotic experience in that I feel amazingly satisfied with what I am expressing. It becomes an addicting experience, causing me to return time and time again.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on five books.

Hidden Dimensions – Completed and going to print June, 2019. This effort allows the reader to see inside themselves. The art acts as a mirror into the viewers’ essences, eliciting what resides beneath their physical surface. The imagery is unique and confrontational.

Photographic Art – In process for 2019. This body of work presents illustrations and photographic imagery of color, shape and form to make the reader smile and to create intrigue about what is art.

Yoga… a Healing Moment – In process for 2019. This is an explication of the human condition and the body as it moves through different asanas.

Being Different – In process for 2020. This body of work presents our views about masculinity, race and culture.

Dharma… Who are we – In process for 2020. This body of work is about our awakening as spiritual creatures, while connecting to this mass of flesh we call a body.

Ten Revealments by Denis Goodwin, author of The Prison Planet Handbook

Title: The Prison Planet Handbook
Author: Denis Goodwin
Publisher: XLibris
Genre: Reference
Format: Ebook

Who are we, and where did we come from? When we turn to the information provided to us, we find a mud pool of possibilities. Is this intended to subvert our built-in guidance systems? We also discover that people who are adept at researching big-picture science are offered special jobs conditional on being sworn to secrecy. What is behind this strategy? Sometimes, the reality prescribed to us doesn’t fit with or explain what we experience. So if you too know something is not quite right, wonder what else is out there, what the bigger picture is, who benefits with us excluded from it, and are ready for changes on earth, the bottom line is here.

PURCHASE HERE

Ten Revealments (Or perhaps, The Whistleblowers Prayer)

1. There is a massive unexplained chasm in our history involving the demise of the Dinosaurs and humans on this planet acquiring a reptile brain stem. They call this the ancient brain but we know interbreeding doesn't cause a specific anomaly in all races. We have snippets from the past that the Reptilian Beings worshipped the sun, s-u-n and Adam and Eve were dealing with a serpent in the Garden of Eden but the effort put into holding us to an Earth and physical only reality for thousands of years suggests it is, for some reason, forbidden territory.

2. It is fairly clear there are two different mind patterns in play on the planet. We are familiar with the all men are created equal Human one with the inbuilt guidance - emotions, inhibitions and conscience.

3. The ruling one operates along different lines relying on hierarchy, rituals, symbolism and pageantry. It is coming out with the pedophilia in the US that they call themselves Satanists and worship Lucifer. The only people capable of staging a world war would be the rulers of the planet and it is reasonable to assume that people happy about doing it more than once would have cold blooded mind pattern and a cold blooded agenda.

4. Montauk Project survivor Stewart Swerdlow's Hidden History video fills in the blanks, has flow charts for the colonising of this solar system from other parts of the galaxy, explains why and how the genetic mix came about and makes it clear we have a parasite that is controlling our information and planet. This makes it clear that the missing link in our history is being deliberately hidden.

5. Mentioning Reptiles always draws a negative response. Is this because of genetic memory? But there is a bigger problem holding us back. The mental discomfort we feel when our beliefs are challenged is called cognitive dissonance. Life appears to be about learning and we seem to be the ultimate information sponges so when we are selectively informed we become programmed. So raising our true history that explains the anomalies in our genetics and solar system we hit this programmed wall of cognitive dissonance. Deprogramming involves the slow tedious hassle of going through the grieving process. The first response is denial which is followed by anger. The bargaining, depression and acceptance that follow are likely to happen over a more extended period.

6. What is also being hidden is how the universe works. There are different levels of reality occupying the same space and each level sustains the one above. The spirit word traipsed continually through church proceedings hints at the different levels but the one word cover story - heaven, cuts them off. Animals, plants and insects are below us and the emotional energy we give off sustains the spirit level above us. The spirit form of the reptiles live off and crave fear that we are not keen on sharing so they have to create events that deliver it - wars terrorism etc. The psychic stuff is the spiritual evidence they have been scaring us away from with witch hunts and evil spirits.

7. In the genetic mix the Blue Bloods have 50/50 Human/Reptile genetics with Reptile mind pattern. As mind pattern controls DNA they have to ingest Human blood and hormones to maintain Human form. With not having inbuilt guidance they don't give off emotional energy so they have a need based agenda to control and exploit us. The dinosaurs were their farm animals so with their demise and the genetic mix we have become their farm animals and slaves. We also convert physical food to spirit food for both sides in the spirit world, so they don't want us to understand how everything works either.

8. The New World Order the Global Elite are pushing is for a borderless communist planet. This was probably underway 100 years ago with the drive for a League of Nations using their problem, reaction, solution scam. From the Human perspective of self-sufficiency, could there be anything more loony?

9. An official announcement isn't going to happen as criminals don't do that sort of thing. Especially when the criminality is as huge as what the Blue Bloods are responsible for. The destiny of the planet is what is at stake here and we have to earn the right to take control of

10. Hiding our true history has been hiding our parasite. If we don't understand our past we will never be up with the play. Information that was never available to our parents is now available to us. The time has come to leave beliefs and having faith behind and take the step into knowledge and understanding. We now have a duty to not only grow up and inform ourselves but also to bring an end to the stupidity for the sake of the following generations.

Now, the secrets behind the midnight eyes of her mate have started to come to light, and this unbalanced truth affects her, her parents, and what’s left of her friends.

When her mate’s mother gets abducted and everyone leaves to find her, Tracey’s left to fend for herself. She finds peace in finally being alone without the bond of her mate overwhelming her and revels in a freedom that she has tried to obtain since mating. But it is short lived. She wakes, bound and blindfolded, awaiting a torturous greeting from an unlikely foe… Someone who has an appetite for vengeance.

The Burdened has rule over Nathan and his life. The more he fights it, it prevails. But rescuing his mate and his mother is a dead cert, and Nathan will destroy anything and anyone who stands in his way.

I flick my enamored gaze back onto the black-and-white tiles, cheeks on fire. Crap! He probably thinks I’m like the floozies from earlier, stupefied by a cute smile and well-lined beard.
And to make it worse, he cackles, head falling forward, having a few strands of his hair fall onto his forehead.
I snort, hating I’ve become his amusement today.
There’s cautiousness in his movement when he drags his hands from his pockets and approaches me. “Let me help you,” he drones. His reach is precarious, but when he latches onto my waist, his grasp is steady. I’m ambushed by a plethora of sensations from the contact; my heart stutters and my breaths rush from my lungs as he lifts me off the bed.
“Thanks,” I mutter, meeting his eyes. Which, is something I’ve been trying to avoid since I had passed out.
They take me in, and the hazel-brown swirls. I stare in awe as liquid emerald blends with milk chocolate.
He blinks and backs away, releasing his hold. I didn’t notice how aware I was of his hands being on me until they fall away, an immersing sense of comfort and warmth going with them.
“Let’s go. It’s getting late; you need to get home.” His rigid, deepened voice differs from the discerning one he used only moments ago.
“Um,” I mumble.
He lifts his gaze and looks past my shoulder toward the doorway, eyes brown again.
My eyes narrow and I point to his face. “That’s different.”
“I know,” he says. “It’s also a pain in my ass.” He sweeps his hand toward the door.
Not wanting to pry, I shrug and walk out of the room.
“Hi, Mrs. Waturstrom,” I greet the woman behind the nurse’s desk. “I’m a little better, but my head still hurts. May I have something for my headache that’ll tide me over until I get home, please?”
“Of course, Tracey. Nice to see you’re okay. I’ll give you a Tylenol for your pain and a bottle of water. Wait there a moment,” she adds, turning away to her cabinet of pain-relieving goodies. Our school nurse is a nice little lady whose smooth skin and perfect posture is a compliment to her age. She says it is because her late husband kept her young. He passed away a year or so ago, and it’s noticeable his passing broke her heart. She lost the spring in her step. Now, she’s the basic happy nurse, keeping a smile on and speaking with a slight hint of excitement but it’s not from her heart. If it weren’t for the small, tear-shaped scar under her right eye, she’d be flawless for her age.
I rest against the counter. “Thank you.”
“Now, Tracey. I’m not trying to meddle, but sometimes I can’t help myself.” Mrs. Waturstrom examines the label of a pill bottle and continues, “Are you two dating?”
My eyes bulge. I hurry to sober them, knowing he can see my expression with him only being a foot away. “No, ma’am. I don’t even know him,” I hurry to say, wanting to clear up any confusion. “There was an accident.”
“Oh!” she gasps as if my denial of our involvement is unbelievable. “I’m sorry, dear. I thought, well, with the way he carried you in here and his concern over you being well. That boy even fell asleep in that hard chair, waiting for you to wake up.”

Book Feature: Where To? How I Shed My Baggage and Learned to Live Free by Jennifer B. Monahan

WHERE TO? HOW I SHED MY BAGGAGE AND LEARNED TO LIVE FREE
By Jennifer B. Monahan
* Memoir *

Title: WHERE TO? HOW I SHED MY BAGGAGE AND LEARNED TO LIVE FREE
Author: Jennifer B. Monahan
Publisher: Spirit Evolution
Pages: 234
Genre: Memoir

When Jennifer Monahan announced her intention to leave her well-established career as a business strategy consultant and give up her rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco to do a global walkabout for an undetermined amount of time, her friends and family thought she was insane. But Jennifer was excited about taking the time to truly explore and immerse herself in a variety of cultures, so their skepticism didn’t faze her; plus she was used to traveling alone as a woman with only one carry-on bag. What she didn’t count on was discovering all the excess baggage she had been carrying with her from her past.

WHERE TO? chronicles one year of Monahan’s life, primarily in the Guatemalan jungle, but also in Japan, Cambodia and Thailand. Living in a thatched-roof hut in a tiny village, Monahan connected with local shamans and participated in their ancient rituals, became fully integrated into the daily life of a local family, and ultimately faced down some of the greatest losses and long-buried pain she had experienced. WHERE TO? shares the six steps she took to heal and courageously create the life of her dreams and includes a workbook for readers to do the same.

“Some memoirs tell us stories and open up worlds we never knew, but some open up places in our own hearts and souls that we have wanted to explore and have never given ourselves the chance to do so. Where To? How I Shed My Baggage and Learned to Live Free by Jennifer B. Monahan belongs to the second category of memoirs…While it reads like the memoir of a woman who takes the courage to explore the world, this memoir has powerful spiritual hints. In fact, it is the story of a soul in search of itself. Where To? is a spiritual testament, a book that describes a journey towards inner freedom and authenticity. Many readers will feel the resonance of Jennifer’s story in their own lives.”

March 1, 2017
The roars of a howler monkey outside the window of my thatched-roof hut woke me up at 4 a.m. It was my second night sleeping in the jungle of El Remate, Peten, Guatemala, and I was still adjusting to all the animal noises. As I lay awake, I thought about what a blur the past two weeks had been.

I finished up my book tour for This Trip will Change Your Life: A Shaman’s Story of Spirit Evolution in Connecticut and New Hampshire amidst the first major snowstorms of 2017. I flew home to San Francisco, packed up the last of my belongings and put everything in storage, turned in the keys for my apartment to my landlord, and then flew to Guatemala. My plan was to spend three months in Guatemala while writing my next book, and then travel around for
another three months or so before returning to San Francisco.

What made me move here?

Well, in November 2014, I was hit by a minivan while walking across the street. I was out of work for a little over three months, on crutches for eight months, and wearing some form of a cast for fourteen months. My doctor didn’t think I’d walk without either surgery or a crutch or brace for the rest of my life, but I happily proved her wrong, mainly because of the shamanic work I did on myself while I was healing.

Since I was stuck on my couch for about six months, I had plenty of time to think. I realized that I wanted to live life on my terms, the way I wanted to, rather than following a prescribed path about how I should live, work, and be. I wanted to follow my heart and my life calling, and I knew that would require me to make some major changes to my life. In short, I wanted to live authentically.

Living authentically isn’t easy. It should be, but there are so many things that hold us back. For me to get to this place, and truly know who I am, I had to do quite a bit of work over a period of several years, including:

Releasing personas that I’d adopted in life that no longer served me
Identifying limiting beliefs that really weren’t relevant
Discovering who I am and what makes me unique
        Figuring out my life purpose
Learning to tap into my own personal power and trust, and
        Following my heart

Once I knew myself better, my path became clearer and I was able to move ahead…or, in this case, to Guatemala.
